When fitting a body protector, ensure it is worn over the clothing you plan to ride in. Since it should fit snugly against your torso, most riders wear one over lightweight clothing like a ventilated riding shirt or jersey, with heavier garments and outerwear layered on top. However, if you intend to wear your body protector over heavier clothing, be sure to measure and try it on while wearing these garments.

Different manufacturers may require slightly different measurements on their size charts, such as chest, waist, and length. Nevertheless, the chest measurement holds the greatest significance regardless of the brand of body protector you are considering. This is because most body protectors have adjustable lengths through shoulder tabs and can also be adjusted at the waist.

To find the right size body protector, follow these basic steps. You will need a soft fabric tape measure, a pen, and paper to record your measurements.

Tips for Checking the Fit of Your Body Protector:

To ensure that your body protector fits properly, you must consider the variation in fit between different styles and manufacturers. It is crucial to find the best fit for your body, which may require trying out various brands and styles. If you are unable to achieve a suitable fit, you may need to consider ordering a custom body protector tailored to your measurements. It is advisable to seek the guidance of a knowledgeable trainer if you have any concerns about the fit.

Prior to wearing the body protector, make sure to loosen all closures and flex the body protector. After putting it on, fasten the chest and waist closures to achieve a snug fit. Ensure that there is room within the closures for further adjustments in tightening or loosening. If the body protector is already at the end of its adjustment range, it may be necessary to try a different size or type of vest.

Note: Some body protectors may adjust to your body as they warm up during use. If this is the case with your body protector, remember to readjust the closures ten to twenty minutes after putting it on.

With the body protector fitted securely around your chest and waist, check the front length. The body protector should extend to your breastbone and cover your bottom rib. The shoulders and neckline of the body protector should lie flat against your body. If the vest pulls away from your body and the desired fit cannot be achieved, you may need to opt for a shorter length. Some styles allow you to adjust the length of the protector using tabs at the shoulders.

Assess the back length by sitting in a saddle and simulating your riding positions. There should be an approximate two to four inches gap between the saddle and the base of the body protector at the back. If the body protector comes into contact with the saddle, it could cause discomfort near your neck or interfere with your riding.
